Clarifier Hydraulics, Detention Time & Overflow Rates

Sedimentation basins and secondary clarifiers rely on precise retention times and hydraulic loading rates to allow suspended floc and biological solids to settle effectively without solids carryover.


1. Hydraulic Detention Time (HRT)

Detention time measures the theoretical time required for a parcel of water to pass completely through a tank:

Detention Time (Hours) = Volume (Gallons) รท Flow Rate (Gallons per Hour)

Geometric Volume Formulas:
โ€ข Rectangular Basin: Volume (cu ft) = Length ร— Width ร— Water Depth
โ€ข Circular Tank: Volume (cu ft) = 0.7854 ร— (Diameter)ยฒ ร— Side Water Depth
โ€ข Convert to Gallons: Gallons = Volume (cu ft) ร— 7.48 gal/cu ft

2. Weir Overflow Rate (WOR)

The Weir Overflow Rate evaluates the hydraulic load passing over each linear foot of the effluent weir crest:

WOR (gpd/ft) = Daily Influent Flow (gpd) รท Total Weir Length (ft)

For a circular peripheral weir, Weir Length = ฯ€ ร— Diameter = 3.14159 ร— D. Ten-States standards recommend keeping WOR below 10,000โ€“15,000 gpd/ft.

3. Surface Overflow Rate (SOR / Settling Rate)

Surface Overflow Rate (gpd/sq ft) = Daily Flow (gpd) รท Clarifier Surface Area (sq ft)

Exam certification boards frequently ask candidates to identify whether a clarifier is hydraulically overloaded:

5. Troubleshooting Rising Sludge vs Septic Sludge

A favorite ABC/WPI exam question asks how to differentiate solids floating on the secondary clarifier surface:

Denitrification (Rising Sludge)

  • Symptom: Clumps of healthy brown sludge floating with small odorless gas bubbles.
  • Root Cause: Nitrate ($\text{NO}_3^-$) is reduced to inert Nitrogen gas ($N2$) in anoxic blanket zones, buoying sludge.
  • Remedy: Increase Return Activated Sludge (RAS) pumping rate to reduce blanket detention time below 2 hours.

Septic Anaerobic Sludge

  • Symptom: Black sludge, foul rotten egg odor ($H2S$ gas), and pH drop in effluent.
  • Root Cause: Prolonged sludge detention time with zero dissolved oxygen leading to anaerobic sulfate reduction.
  • Remedy: Check clarifier collector flights, increase RAS/WAS removal rate, and improve aeration DO.
