๐Ÿ“˜ Granular Media Filtration Guide

Rapid Sand Filtration & Backwash Hydraulics

Filtration is the primary physical barrier against Giardia, Cryptosporidium cysts, and turbidity in drinking water treatment. Exam questions test hydraulic loading rates (gpm/sq ft) and backwash bed expansion dynamics.

1. Filter Hydraulic Loading Rate

Loading Rate (gpm/sq ft) = Influent Flow (GPM) รท Filter Surface Area (sq ft)

โ€ข Conventional Sand Filters: 2.0 to 4.0 gpm/sq ft.
โ€ข High-Rate Dual/Multi-Media Filters: 4.0 to 6.0+ gpm/sq ft.

2. Backwash Rise Rate (Inches per Minute)

During backwash, clean water is pumped upward to fluidize and expand the sand/anthracite bed:

Rise Rate (in/min) = [Backwash Rate (gpm/sq ft) ร— 12 in/ft] รท 7.48 gal/cu ft

3. The Three Primary Filter Backwash Triggers

Operators must initiate backwash whenever any one of these three operational thresholds is reached:

4. Fluidized Bed Expansion & Washwater Volume

A high-efficiency backwash achieves 20% to 40% media bed expansion (typically requiring 15 โ€“ 22 gpm/sq ft). Total washwater consumption should remain below 2% to 5% of total filtered water production.

Bed Expansion (%) = [(Expanded Depth - Initial Depth) รท Initial Depth] ร— 100

5. Filter Ripening & Filter-to-Waste (FTW) Protocol

Immediately following a backwash cycle, clean media lacks the initial coagulant coating necessary for high-efficiency capture. This initial period (15 to 30 minutes) is called filter ripening.

โš ๏ธ Critical EPA Compliance Rule:

Under the EPA Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR), filter-to-waste (FTW) valves must divert initial ripening water to drain until individual filter effluent turbidity drops strictly below 0.30 NTU (ideally <0.10 NTU) before entering clearwell storage, preventing Cryptosporidium oocyst contamination.
